“The successful tool for leadership is the art of communication.”
Do you know why politicians repeat themselves all the time? Because it works. Similarly, leaders have to do that exact thing. We cannot always say it in the same way or with the same medium, but we have got to constantly tell the story in multiple ways.
First of all, my responsibility is to find ways to tell stories and teach lessons that I want my team to understand and then share with others. Everyone has different learning styles and absorb information in various ways. If I give everybody on our team books, that might work for half the people but others need audio books, short articles, or they need to hear me speak on it at our SCRUM (our morning meeting). Modern leaders understand that their team is filled with different learning styles and they communicate to those unique styles.
I understand that I often times overshare, however I would much rather overshare than leave our team in the dark or not allow a teammate to acquire knowledge because I did not facilitate to their style of learning. It also goes a step beyond handing out reading material and speaking on a topic, at a certain point leaders must live their voice. Great leaders know that they can tell something and maybe change a day in the office but if they show it, if they live it out for their team, it becomes their culture, their DNA, their brand and that is what leadership communication and sharing is all about, becoming one brand. As leaders we must strive to not only communicate differently and often but to also embody the principles we want our team and our organization to embody. I urge you to uncover the learning styles of your team and communicate to them in their own language.
